I often say this, but it's worthy or repetition.
The two most formative thuings which happen to build a person are
parenting and
schooling.
If schooling is problematic, then private tuition is the best way I know of, to get your children back on track at school.
Educating a child is like building a house. You start at the foundations, and you build them well. With solid foundations, you can build carefully upwards, making sure all the bricks are steady as you go. Such a building will be strong and will weather the storms and last well.
If your child's education is dodgy early on, then the foundations are rocky, and whatever is built on top is at risk. And it's more than the academic side of things that's at risk, too. A child who struggles academically, is going to struggle with self esteem. They may develop hostilities towards authority or academia or those around them, or the world in general. And these negative tendencies can grow unless they are found and fixed - and the earlier the better.
Large class sizes, poor class discipline, stretched resources and confused management may all contribute to failures at school for your child, and you may not even know it's happening.
Private tuition is highly focused - it's just your child and a tutor, in a room, talking about the subject. In this environment, all aspects of the student can be considered. Are they bored, stressed or afraid? If they are, the tutor can explore that, giving friendship, reassurance, humour etc. to build a happy learning environment.
The tutor can also look for the exact point where the academic difficulties arise, digging down to wherever solid foundations can be found, correcting misconceptions, filling in missing knowledge, and building up from their.
Pace can be set by what's happening for the student, not by class bells or term schedules.
There is quiet - no distractions, no disruptions, no-one to gossip with, no one to poke fun. Just the work.
Theses private tuition sessions can work extremely effectively in correcting problems for your child. And the tuition schedule you choose can suit you. Sometimes a quick "in-out" is all that's needed to put your child back on track. Sometimes, it's a weekly session or two and a long-term relationship. Other folks will come and go and come again, as developments unfold at school. Whatever works for you is usually OK for your private tutor.
Private tuition can take place in your home, with your tutor travelling to you for a small fee. Alternatively, many students will travel to their tutor.
A1 Tutors is the tutor agency I recommend in my home area - Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
They are family-run, highly professional, and they've been doing it since 1983, so they must be getting something right! All tutors are CRB-checked and their teaching credentials are verified. Prices are reasonable at around £26 per hour if you travel to your tutor. And a vast range of subjects are taught from Key Stage 1 through to graduate work.
Even better, they'ev commissioned me to write a series of articles for them to help parents with school children to make things better. Those articles will be free newsletters, and you can sign up for these free parent tips for school children here.
